Post Christmas Clear Out

Has anyone else had their post Christmas clear out yet? I started mine today and it feels mighty fine. I was blessed enough over the Christmas break to be the recipient of a number of very thoughtful gifts, however whenever I bring new items into my home I like to get rid of things that are no good or I no longer use to avoid being surrouned by clutter. Generally, I try to have a ‘one in, two out’ rule.

I started with my bathroom and got rid of some old cosmetics that I no longer use or were old and slightly yuck looking. I then moved onto the bedroom and donated a top and binned some old underwear that I would be embarrassed to be seen in if I had to be admited to hospital.

So far, I may have only got rid of a few bits and pieces, but to me that makes all the difference when it comes to not being surrounded by clutter. It’s a lot easier to do little bits and pieces here and there as it’s far less overwhelming than being surrounded by mountains of clutter. As much as I didn’t want to, it feels good having got the ball rolling which has motivated me to do a little bit more over the next week. I’d much rather start the new year out on a good note rather that set a resolution that I’m not going to stick to.

One thing I would like to be very clear about is that whilst I practice minimalism, I’m very grateful and appreciative for all the gifts I did receive regardless of what they were. Not everyone around me has a minimalist lifestyle, and that’s also why I buy people stuff. It’s important to remember that not everyone has the same beliefs as you which is why I believe it’s important to be grateful. And you know what? I am. I received some lovely Christmas gifts and it’s also renewed my motivation for minimalism and not let clutter build up in my home.

I am curious to know what how others are feeling post Christmas. What gifts did you receive and are you keeping them? Have you had a clear out to make way for them? Has this motivated you to get rid of stuff you no longer need?
